Gem Science Major Emphasis

The Department of Geosciences has launched a first-of-its-kind major emphasis in Gem Science starting Fall 2021.

Coursework

The Gem Science emphasis within the Geosciences major will provide a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to the study of gems. Below is a sample of topics students can expect to learn:

Introduction to Gems and Minerals (Flyer)

Areas of study will include mineralogy, petrology, crystallography, geochemistry, tectonics, and economic mineral deposits, among other courses.

Gem Characterization and Optical Properties

Students will have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses, including courses from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as the College of Optical Sciences.

Sustainable Mining and Impact on Human Civilization

The Gem Science emphasis will include classes focusing on sustainability from the Department of Mining & Geological Engineering.

Market Characteristics and Retailing

To better prepare students for careers in Gemology and Gem Science, the Gem Science emphasis will include courses from the Retailing and Consumer Sciences.

Design Concepts

Courses from the School of Art will allow students to gain hands-on experience with 3D modeling and rendering.

Prerequisites will include foundational math, chemistry, and physics courses.

Capstone Themes

Capstone coursework will include apprenticeships and internships at The RealReal and the Gemological Institute of America, as well as research opportunities across campus at the University of Arizona!

Career Opportunities

Gem Science students will gain a unique interdisciplinary skill-set for employment in the gem and mining industries. Graduates will be qualified to become gem and mineral researchers at top laboratories, wholesalers, and retailers, like The RealReal.
