| Artist | Song | Chords/Tabs/Lyrics | How's it "sposed" to sound? | Notes |
| Gomez | Silence | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | Suggested by Rick--great song...I agree we should learn this...doesn't look too challenging either |
| Cake (covering Gloria Raynor) | I Will Survive | chords/lyrics | youtube | This is a great song and super easy. Bass right take a few minutes to get. Gives us a chance to pull out some of the more interesting percussion stuff. |
| Blues Bros. (covering...Rowdy Yates, according to Elwood) | Rawhide | chords/lyrics | youtube | This could be fun either close to original or maybe even punked up. The video reminds me that we should do "Gimme some lovin'" too... |
| Traditional | Ghost Riders in the Sky | chords/lyrics | youtube | same as above. |
| ZedZed Top | LaGrange | tabs (holy tabs)...chords/lyrics (easy version) | youtube | speaks for itself |
| The Eagles of Death Metal | Secret Plans | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube; another version | already listed below, but we promised Rick we'd learn at least one of these EODM songs, and this is a good lookin one |
| Alice in Chains | Heaven Beside You | tabs look pretty tricky, lots of variations...maybe we could just listen and fake a simplified version if Rick insists on this? | youtube | I looked at the tabs on this...holy crap...sounds simple but would take some work |
| Artist | Song | Chords/Tabs/Lyrics | How's it "sposed" to sound? | Notes |
| Stuff we're not half bad at?... | ||||
| The Clash (covering The Bobby Fuller Four) | I Fought the Law | chords/tabs/lyrics old/alt...chords/tabs/lyricsold/alt...chords/tabs/lyrics |
youtube | Check out the new tabs. I think this is the one we should focus on emulating. Different key; sharper Clashesque focus. Adjusted screwed up tab 10/19/09. |
| Ramones | Beat on the Brat | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | Tabs reformatted. We're close on this one...listen and practice |
| The Animals | House of the Rising Sun | chords/lyrics | we don need no stinkin youtube | Great for warming up and jammin |
| Ramones | Blitzkrieg Bop | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | Check out the new tabs. We're almost ready for prime-time...adjusted solo tab 10/19/09. |
| David Bowie | The Jean Genie | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | Tabs reformatted 110109; got ending. |
| David Bowie | Rebel Rebel | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | One guitar should be playing the riff most of the song, while the other strums a chord now and then (listen). Tabs reformatted 110109. Added a ton more words and order. |
| Pixies (covering JaMC) | Head On | chords/lyrics | youtube | To make this sound better we need to work on the specific transitions and use power chords instead of conventional ones...maybe listen a time or two and work on making it sound 'harder'...and either Roy or I should learn that solo. |
| The Kinks | You Really Got Me | chords/lyrics | youtube | facile et fun |
| Pixies | Cactus | chords/lyrics | youtube | PR...We already played this..easy, fun. |
| Pixies | Cecelia Ann | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | Reformatted the tabs. We just need one guitar to do the solo and the other to do the chords. Rocks! Tabs reformatted 110109; yellow = short notes. |
| The Stones | Satisfaction | chords/lyrics | youtube | Bass is key here. Reformatted tabs, lyrics, order 110109 |
| Them | Gloria | youtube | easy....need to smoke more to get voice like that though | |
| The Kinks | Apeman | tabs/etc. | ||
| The Kinks | Destroyer | tabs/etc. | youtube | could be fun? |
| The Who | Can't Explain | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | fun/easy, but solo may be tricky |
| Calexico | Guero Canelo | lyrics, E-E7-Am, got it? (can even leave out the E7) | my internet stopped working...look it up! | this one will get us the local babes |
| The Clash | Should I Stay... | tabs/lyrics | youtube or youtube | There is no excuse for not playing this song. Check out the tabs. Willy--this guy thinks it's spanish, not latin...hmmm |
| Songs we should try... | ||||
| Steve Goodman | City of New Orleans | tabs/lyrics | you know this | adapt? |
| Cream | Sunshine of your love | tabs/lyrics | youtube | why not |
| Grateful Dead | Me and my uncle | tabs/lyrics | youtube | great and easy song suggested by Andy |
| Alejandro Escovedo | Chip 'n' Tony | lyrics (you wouldn't believe the electronic machinations I had to go through to get these) | the song | this guy is awesome and this song is right up our garagey alley...and the lyrics are pretty cool |
| Patti Smith | Gloria | lyrics...chords: nears I reckon it's just E-D, but can mix it with original version's take too? | youtube | frickin awesome tune |
| Woody Guthrie (lyrics); music (in this version at least) by Billy Bragg and Natalie Merchant | Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key | chords/lyrics | youtube awesome video | not much drums but great tune |
| Kurt Weill | Mack the Knife | tabs/lyrics | youtube | Andy suggested this might be vulnerable to a cool garagesque hard-rockin version and I think we should try it...the chords don't necessarily need to stay the same...could be powered to give it a little more edge...the lyrics are already pretty edgy (would be cool to do it in the original German too, anyone?) |
| The Arctic Monkeys | Fake Tales of San Francisco | tabs, lyrics | youtube | rully easy and rully rockin...I love this band. |
| Grateful Dead | Friend of the Devil | tabs/etc. | PUNK IT UP, BABY. | |
| The Stones | Jumpin Jack Flash | chords/lyrics | youtube | Haven't tried it these tabs; looks like it might take a little bit of work, but might not be too bad. |
| The Strokes | Last Nite | tabs 1; tabs 2; tabs 3 | youtube | As Rick says, rocks like us (though I think he meant like we). Good tune. One cool thing is it has two different guitar parts, neither of which sounds too hard. I put up several tabs, the third one looks like a compilation? Listen to the song and let's try this. This is a potentially good sound for us, I agree. |
| The Thermals | Now We Can See | tabs/etc. | youtube | from Willy, looks very fun...updated modified tabs 12/31/09 |
| John Denver | Take Me Home... | tabs/etc. | PUNK IT UP, MAN. | |
| Violent Femmes | Blister in the Sun | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | We are almost there...just gotta listen and get the transitions/variations and maybe a few subtle riffs right. |
| Songs that our drummer suggested... | ||||
| Stevie Ray Vaughn | Pride and Joy | tabs/lyrics | youtube | Yikes! Look at them tabs. Maybe we could just get the chords down and improv? |
| Cream | Strange Brew | tabs1....tabs2 | youtube | Yikes again...jeez Rick, you think we're Clapton/Burton? |
| The Byrds | Eight Miles High | tabs | youtube...youtube Husker Du version | Hmmm... |
| Others in the queue... | ||||
| Steve Earle | Tom Ames Prayer | chords/lyrics | The only versions I can find of this online are acoustic, but the album version rocks, and trust me: I think this would be a fun hard-rockin' twanger. Let's try. I'll show you. | |
| Calexico | Alone Again Or | B-C...D-C-G | youtube | this song seems easy to play in G, so I dunno why the chords/tabs I found first weren't... |
| Elvis Costello | Pump It Up | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | via Master Rex (Willy) |
| The Eagles of Death Metal | Secret Plans | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube; another version | from Rick |
| The Who | My Generation | chords/lyrics | youtube (but you know how it goes...) | from Rick |
| Pretenders | Thumbelina | can't find, but E, B, G, A, D, and various 7ths thereof, I think, oughta do it...see video | youtube | we can punk/psychobilly it up a little bit |
| Blur | Beetlebum | chords/tabs/lyrics | you tube | via Dr. Bennett |
| Eagles of Death Metal | Cherry Cola | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | via Dr. Bennett |
| Blur | Coffee & TV | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | via Dr. Bennett |
| Eagles of Death Metal | Speaking in Tongues | chords/tabs/lyrics | youtube | via Dr. Bennett |
| Pixies | Mr. Grieves | chords/lyrics | youtube | PR...Never tried to play but could be good. |
| Pretenders | My City Was Gone | lyrics for some reason I can't find the chords/tabs...but it's some modulated combo of A-D-E, mostly...needs work | youtube hard to find a better version, but this gives you the idea | |

Hey Guys: new songs: Mr Grieves (Pixies), Cactus (Pixies), Head On (Pixies cover of song by Jesus and Mary Chain)
More coming soon! Practice!
3 September 2009
Ok guys: rather than sending an email I thought I'd post this message on our new band website. Which brings up the first item of business...I feel like Murray in Flight of the Conchords here...Band Meeting...Brett?...Jermaine?...anyway...
Band website: Needs work, I know. First, should we get a domain that we all have access to and can modify, add tabs, chord progressions, lyrics, etc., so that we can see them and all access them? Anyone have such a domain? Rick: you're a high-tech nerdy kinda guy--you have access to a private server?
Next session: Unfortunately I can't get together this Saturday. But in general, would Saturdays in the late afternoon/early evening work for you guys? If not, what would be better? Do you want to schedule something routine? I would like to.... NEXT Saturday the 12th? (crap, I actually have something then, but I could forgo it if you guys are available then...or we could start later...like 8? that night)?
Mechanics: I was thinking that maybe a good way to work on getting a few tunes that we can all play reasonably, or at least we know when the chord changes are, would be to pick out a few, get the chord progressions or tabs and lyrics, scan them into a pdf form, and then project them onto the wall using our lab's computer projector. That way we don't have to crowd around a single sheet. This takes a little prep, but I'm willing to put some time in, especially if it's music I'm making you play. If you have tunes you want us to play, how bout you do the scanning and creating of a pdf, and I'll put it in the compilation? Also, listening to a few tunes that we play might be a good idea. At the moment I don't have a great way to share and/or transfer mp3's or anything. Anyone have a good idea for this? Should we burn a CD from our private collections? Not sure how we'd do it.
But the real key (I think; hell what do I know though?) is finding chord progressions, lyrics, and maybe tabs, that we can share. So if you wanna volunteer a song, see if you can come up with some. Have you seen chordie.com?
Specific songs: Personally I kinda like the rockabilly/psychobilly thing we experimented with the other day, doing fast punky versions of House of the Rising Sun and Almost Heaven. But that's just my taste, which tends to veer towards twangy fast rock. Along those lines I also like the Del-Lords, Dave Alvin, Geardaddies, etc. But more importantly, we don't need to settle on our "artistic" groove today. We need to practice playing together and get a few staple songs down.
Songs I can get the sheet music too, so we can project it and try it (a mix of ones I like and ones that are just handy):
House of the Rising Sun
Almost Heaven
Gloria
Hurts So Good (I know, cheesy, but what the hey)
I Fought the Law
Cielito Lindo (could be fun to do an old mariachi standby in fast psychobilly?)
All Apologies
Songs I can put together the chords and lyrics to, and then project:
Zamboni (Geardaddies)
Stupid Boy (Geardaddies)
Thumbelina (Pretenders)
My City Was Gone (Pretenders)...though I gotta learn some riffs in addition to the chords
Cactus (Pixies)
Alone Again Or (Calexico)
How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live (Del-Lords)
Hometown Blues (Steve Earle)
Mercenary Song (Steve Earle)
Barn Burning (Dave Alvin)
Please Don't Bury Me (John Prine)
Songs/groups that I think would be fun but am not sure how to get...maybe you guys know
stuff by Cake--they do a killer version of I Will Survive that I'll bet we could get the chords to
stuff by ZZ Top...Tush? I love that song: My Head's in Mississippi...
Other stuff?
Ok, time for me to get back to my day job.
