Local Shear-Wave Splitting

(Left) Map of shear-wave splitting parameters
for local events within the subducting slab.
These phases sample only the crust of the
overriding plate, the mantle wedge, and a small
portion of the slab. Magnitudes of lag times
range between approximately 0.1-0.4 seconds.
Dots indicate earthquake epicenters from slab
earthquakes utilized for splitting measurements
(not all earthquakes yielded a measurement).
