Geos 306, Lecture 8
Crystal Chemistry II
- In this lecture we will examine the crystal structures of many different minerals in the context of bonding and packing
using the visualization software XtalDraw.
If you have a Windows-based computer, you can try to download and install the software,
You can bring your laptop to class if you want.
This is interactive Windows-based software that draws crystal and molecular structures as ball and stick,
polyhedral, and thermal ellipsoid representations. It comes with a large set of datafiles.
Not only does it read its own XtalDraw datafiles,
but it can also read the American Mineralogist Crystal Structure DataBase datafiles
(Link to database).
- Here is a pdf of an instructional manual Link.
- Your term project will require you to use this software to create a crystal structure drawing of your sample,
once you have identified it.
- You can also access the crystal structure database through the IMA List of Minerals
