The central Andes is the widest, highest part of the 8,000 km long Andean orogenic belt, which is the type example of a mountain belt developed in response to subduction of oceanic lithosphere beneath a continental plate. Our work has focused on determining the timing of major mountain building in the central Andes, and the regional scale structure of the upper crust. Results from recent broadband seismological studies in our Department are also incorporated into our work. Some papers reporting recent findings are listed below:
