Considerations of Academic Mission Purpose and Objectives

Purpose:

To discover and preserve new knowledge through creative scholarship; to prepare students to become engaged and contributing members of a modern global society; and to extend practical wisdom beyond the university to the community, state, nation, and world; with the overall goal of helping to achieve self-realization for individuals and for society as a whole.

Objectives:

To achieve and sustain excellence in research, scholarship, and creative endeavor through the combined work of individual efforts and team efforts within individual disciplines as well as individual and team efforts that cut across programs and disciplines.

To create learning environments and to carry out teaching in ways that our students are informed and inspired by the fundamental research mission, the core of which is a faculty fully engaged in cutting-edge research, scholarship, and creative endeavor.

To strategically apply research, scholarship, and creative endeavor to society, locally, statewide, regionally, and globally, thus connecting the excellence and passion we have to offer with society’s most pressing needs and requirements, both with respect to economic development and quality of life.

To enhance the diversity of our university – to be evidenced in our people, programs, curricula, values, & communication networks -- knowing that our success and impact as a university in the 21st century will require unambiguous expression that we are part of a diverse state, regional, and global community.
