Deep Earthquakes
The June 17, 1996, Deep Flores Sea Earthquake
The Flores Sea deep earthquake is the second largest in recorded history. It occured on the down-going Australia-India slab in a region know as the Banda Sea.
The June 9, 1994, Deep Bolivian Earthquake
The largest deep earthquake to occur this century happened on June 9, 1994 beneath Northern Bolivia. Detailed analysis of this event has provided new constraints on the mechanisms of deep seismicity.
- Mainshock Moment Tensor Solution
- Moment tensor inversion techniques were utilized to determine the source parameters of the mainshock and of the other strong events in this sequence.
- Aftershock Locations
- Aftershock Fault Plane Solutions
- Using data recorded on the BANJO and SEDA arrays, a grid search was used to determine focal mechanisms for 12 aftershocks (Mb=2.7 to 5.3)
