Lecture Textbook,

Required: Essentials of Geology, U. Arizona edition, by Wicander, Monroe, Best; Lab textnone, individual notes will be handed out at the beginning of each lab

Attendance

Attendance in lecture is mandatory.  Material covered in lecture provides the principal basis for exam and quiz questions.

Lecture Assignments

Textbook readings are given in the schedule.  These are not optional and should be finished before the subject is covered in lecture.

Lecture Exams and Quizzes

There will be on mid-term lecture exam and a final.  I won’t offer the final exam any earlier.Exam dates are provided in the schedule.

Extra Credit

A few modest extra-credit opportunities will be made available, including two optional Saturday field trips.

Make-ups

Exams can be made up where the excuse is legitimate.  In the past, I have granted a make up in about 50% of the cases. For example, waking up late is not an acceptable excuse, but illness is.  Labs may or may not be made up, depending on your lab instructor’s policy.

Field Trips

There will be three field trips, one during regularly scheduled lab hours, and two on Saturdays (see lab schedule).  Attendance on the field trip during regular lab hours is mandatory, whereas you are only required to attend one of the Saturday trips.  You will receive extra credit if you attend both. You cannot make up any of these trips; nor will it be possible to bring students back to Tucson early except in the case of major medical emergencies.

Cheating

DON'T DO IT!!!  Cheating can result in a failing grade for this course and may result in your expulsion from the University — refer to The Code of Academic Integrity (copies are available in the Geosciences Office, room 208).  We work on an honors system.

Special needs

Students requiring accommodation in testing or note taking must let me know at the beginning of the course and give a formal letter from the Disability Resource Center.

Course grade

Letter grades are awarded in the usual way: 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C and so forth. 50% of your final grade will be based on your performance in lecture (i.e. quizzes, exams, etc.) and 50% of your final grade will be based on your performance in lab (i.e. written labs, lab exams, field trips, etc.)  The breakdown is as follows:

Lecture (50% of your grade):
15% midterm
15% final
10% homeworks
10% quizzes

Lab (50% of your grade):
25% labs
15% lab exams
10% field trip reports

A few tips for doing well in this course: 1) attend all lectures, labs and fieldtrips, 2) take careful notes, 3) keep ahead of the required reading and 4) come to office hours if you have questions.

Learning Center

Take advantage of the Geosciences Learning Center, Gould-Simpson 205.  This room is open between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. from Monday to Friday.  Lab instructors and preceptors have their office hours here and are ready to help you with questions.

Students Requiring Special Accommodation

Students requiring accommodation in testing or note taking must notify me and must deliver to me a Disability Resource Center faculty letter within the first few days of the course, so that we can make preparations.
