Pollen analysis of Playa Vista sediment cores, Los Angeles County, California Report submitted to Statistical Research Tucson, Arizona . 20 p.

Core 0 was analyzed to a depth of 420 cm. It is dominated by Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthus (1 - 75%) and Other Compositae (5 - 25%) pollen, with a dramatic increase of Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthus in the upper 100 cm. The late-historic peak of Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthus in Core 0, but not in Core 1 or Core 8, is attributed to the better recovery of surface sediments with the hand-operated coring devices in the center of the lagoon. Intervals of low Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthus percentages from 100 - 300 cm coincide with peaks of Other Compositae and low pollen concentration. Pinus, Quercus, and Ceanothus are more abundant below 100 cm as are Gramineae and Cruciferae. Ragweed (Ambrosia) reaches greatest percentages near the middle of the diagram (100 - 300 cm). The remains of marine organisms (dinoflagellates and foraminifera) are present in most samples, but they are five times more frequent than in Core 8.
