Geosciences 2016 Field Camp Video!

Thanks to alumnus Martin Pepper (PhD ’14), UA Geosciences can give prospective field camp students (and alumni who want to reminisce) an insider’s look at our field camp. Using a drone and a hand-held camera, Pepper and teaching assistant Simon Stickroth (current MS student) filmed the daily goings-on of Field Camp 2016, which was led by Professors Barbara Carrapa and Peter DeCelles and looked at the Western U.S. Sevier, Laramide and basin and range deformations.

Eric Kiser Receives NASA NSPIRES Program Grant

Assistant Professor Eric Kiser is part of a NASA NSPIRES program grant: "Large landslides and landslide/glacier-dammed Himalayan and Karakoram rivers and the potential for transboundary disruptions." Kiser is working with Jeffrey Kargel, Research Scientist with UA Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, and Umesh Haritashya of the University of Dayton to investigate geologic and topographic settings and triggers of large historic, pre-historic, and future landslides in the Himalaya and Karakoram mountain ranges.

Vance Holliday is 2018 Recipient of Society for American Archaeology Fryxell Award for Interdisciplinary Research

Vance Holliday faces the camera wearing a bucket hat with his hand on a rock face.Vance Holliday (Professor of Anthropology & Geosciences) is the 2018 recipient of the Society for American Archaeology Fryxell Award for Interdisciplinary Research. The award is presented in recognition for interdisciplinary excellence of a scientist whose research has contributed significantly to American archaeology. The award cycles through zoological sciences, botanical sciences, earth sciences, physical sciences, and general interdisciplinary studies. The 2018 award is for earth science contributions in archaeology. It will be presented at the SAA annual meeting in Washington, D.C. next Spring. The first and only other UA recipient of the award is the other Vance – C. Vance Haynes – in 1978.
