Conduct Mining Rescue Research and Training

PhotoJohn R. Hill, Principal Investigator

Inadequate or insufficient training is often considered as a root cause for many fatalities in the mining industry. Airline pilots train in simulators to experience a wide range of flying conditions and problems. Miners need a comparable type of simulation training so they can experience a wide range of ground conditions and problems.  These simulated training environments will increase worker safety by allowing workers to practice basic job skills involving many hazardous conditions, such as low visibility, unstable ground, or working near mobile equipment. In addition, the results of bad choices and incorrect decisions can be illustrated graphically without actually exposing trainees to danger. The programming platform is a gaming software engine from Epic Gaming, “UnReal2”.  The software engine has been used by NIOSH to test the concept of using it to build mine safety training simulators.  We will be able to import the 3D mine maps of the SXML and then create training scenarios for mine emergencies, mine rescue, and mine safety training.  The software can be installed on a mid-range personal computer and allows multi-player interactivity. We will develop and test simulators for the SXML for our students and for our tunnel workers training classes and we will evaluate changes in safety management and hazard recognition.
