When beginning work in any new area, one of the first challenges is to learn the geography of the region. This is especially difficult in the polar regions, where it is not always obvious which way east and west lie on different maps, and north is every direction away from the pole. Remember that when looking down on the South Pole, east is in a clockwise direction and west is counter-clockwise. The following map should help. It was modified slightly from Behrendt et al., 1991.
