Chapter 7: Phylum Cnidaria

1. The extinct anthozoan order Tabulata shows several morphological variations. Examine Halysites, Favosites, Syringopora, Actinocoelia and Aulopora.

a. Draw three of the above genera and label the following morphological features (if present): septal spines, corallum, corallite and tabulae.

b. What growth form is exhibited by Aulopora? by Actinocoelia? by Favosites?

2. Examine both solitary and colonial Rugosa.

a. Draw an example of each and label the following morphological features (if present): calyx, septa, fossula, epitheca, corallite, axial columella, tabulae, dissepiment, and corallum.

b. Look at the specimens of Lophophyllidium profundum and Heliophyllum halli. Draw each specimens and label the septa on it. Compare and contrast these two genera. (Hint: look carefully at the septa!)

3. Scleractinia: the modern reef-forming corals and their friends and relatives.

a. Draw the arrangement of corallites of each of the following genera: Endopachys, Fungia, Porites and Septastrea.

b. How are neighboring polyps distinguished in Porites?

c. How is the Paleocene cup coral Trochocyathus distinguished from Paleozoic solitary rugose corals?
