Required Textbook:
Physical Geology: Exploring the Earth by Monroe and Wicander, 3rd ed., 1998

Attendance:
Attendance in lecture is required. Exams and quizzes emphasize material covered in lecture as well as information in the text. You will only be able to earn a high grade by attending lectures, taking careful notes, and doing all the required reading.

Lecture Assignments:

  1. Textbook readings are given on the reverse side. These are not optional and must be finished before the subject is covered in lecture.
  2. Problems may be given during lecture and are indicative of the types of problems and questions that will appear on exams.
  3. Unannounced quizzes are given in lecture. The cumulative score for your four best quizzes will count as a fourth exam.

Lecture Exams:
Three exams are scheduled on the dates shown on the
Lecture Schedule. The exams cover only material since the previous exam -- they are not cumulative. Make-up exams will only be given in exceptional situations and must be cleared ahead of time. Exams will emphasize a general understanding of the topic. Slides shown in class may be used during exams. There may also be some short answer, multiple choice, true-false, and essay questions. Each exam will be worth 100 points. Copies of exams from previous years are on reserve in the Science Library. If you have a problem with the way your exam was graded, please discuss it with your instructor within one week after the exam has been returned.

Extra Credit:
There will be several opportunities, including field trip reports and other writing assignments, to earn extra credit during the semester. You can earn up to 40 extra credit points, where extra credit points count the same as exam points.

Cheating:
DON'T DO IT!!! Cheating is any attempt to represent someone else's work (on exams, quizzes, extra credit reports) as your own. Cheating can result in a failing grade for this course and may result in your expulsion from the University -- refer to The Code of Academic Integrity (copies are available in the Geosciences Office, room 208). We work on an honors system. If you are aware of cheating, please inform your instructor. If you observe cheating during an exam or quiz, please discreetly inform the instructor by a written message. Your report will be held strictly confidential.

Course Grade:
Grades will be as follows: >90% = A; 80% to 90% = B; 70% to 80% = C; 60% to 70% = D; <60% = E. These percentages will be calculated by adding your exam, quiz, and extra credit scores and dividing by 4. In this system it is possible to raise your grade a full mark by doing extra credit!

Learning Center:
Take advantage of the Geosciences Learning Center, Gould-Simpson 205, open 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday to Friday. Lab instructors and undergaduate teaching assistants have their office hours here and are ready to help you with questions about lecture and lab. Scores are posted in this room, and this is where you pick up any work. Be sure you pick up only your own work.
