UNIVERSITY NEWS

Dick Roberts Memorial Scholarship

It is with a great deal of respect and gratitude that The Associated Students of The University of Arizona announce the creation of the Dick Roberts Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Roberts, or as the students used to refer to him as "Uncle Dick," was such a strong supportive member of our university community that the creation of a scholarship is only a small way that the university can remember Uncle Dick.

The scholarship will be made available to all students attending The University of Arizona, with the criteria for award based on " Exemplifying a total campus experience." Mr. Roberts was such a large student advocate who both understood and celebrated the dynamic life of a student inside and out of the classroom.

ASUA has officially begun accepting gifts to the Dick Roberts Memorial Scholarship fund and would like to invite all members of the campus community to contribute. Dick will forever be a part of our wildcat family and this scholarship will forever remind the university community of the wonderful man that cared so much about the students this university is here to serve.

To be part of this scholarship fund, please make your gift (in any amount) by check written to the University of Arizona, and forward to the Associated Students' Office by campus mail to:

ASUA-Dick Roberts Scholarship

PO 210019

Bldg 19, Rm. 325W

Your contributions will be deposited in your name within the Scholarship Office. We thank you for remembering this wonderful man for years to come.

Summer Fieldwork Opportunity - Museum of the Rockies

Museum of the Rockies Summer Paleontology Field Program

Volunteer Application available here:

http://www.museumoftherockies.org/Home/EXPLORE/Paleontology/PaleoResearch/PaleoFieldProgram

/Volunteer/tabid/359/Default.aspx

The Museum of the Rockies maintains one of the largest field programs in the country, conducting fieldwork at multiple sites in the Judith River and Hell Creek Formations of Montana each summer. Research at each site is led by museum staff and graduate students under the direction of Dr. Jack Horner. We accept dedicated, hardworking volunteers to join us for a minimum of three weeks of fieldwork. This minimum time can be reduced for experienced volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, provide their own transportation to Montana, and bring a tent, sleeping bag, and other personal supplies.

All food and tools are provided by the museum, except for your food on town day once a week. This is not a formal internship through Montana State University, and no stipend or class credit is offered. However, your time can count for volunteer service hours, and in some cases students have arranged internship recognition through their home institution.

You will spend 6 days each week quarrying one or more associated dinosaur specimens and making plaster jackets to protect the fossils for transport back to the MOR. Crew members camp in tents or personal trailers, and take turns cooking dinner, washing dishes, and performing other chores around camp. Evenings are spent compiling data, relaxing, and bonding with your new friends. Each Saturday the crew spends the day in a nearby town to buy groceries, do laundry, visit the library, and maybe watch a movie.

No prior fieldwork or academic experience is required. We hope that you will join us for an exciting summer that will give you excellent experience in paleontological fieldwork. All questions, comments, and completed applications should be sent to Liz Freedman at morpaleo@gmail.com.

Funding Opportunity - Advanced Technological Education Program

NSF is soliciting proposals for the Advanced Technological Education program. This program involves partnerships between academic institutions and employers to promote improvement in the education of science and engineering technicians at the undergraduate and secondary school levels. The program supports curriculum development; professional development of college faculty and secondary school teachers; career pathways to two-year colleges from secondary schools and from two-year colleges to four-year institutions; and other activities. Approximately $46 million was expected to be available annually over fiscal years 2008-10 to support 75 grants per year when this solicitation was released in 2006. Preliminary proposals are strongly encouraged and are due April 24, 2008; full proposals are due Oct. 16, 2008.

For more information, visit: http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf07530.

Funding Opportunity - Research Experiences for Teachers

NSF invites U.S. colleges and universities to submit proposals for the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program. This program supports the active involvement of K-12 teachers and community college faculty in engineering research in order to bring knowledge of engineering and technological innovation into their classrooms. The program features two mechanisms of support for in-service and pre-service K-12 teachers and/or community college faculty: (1) RET Supplements, which may be included in proposals for new or renewal NSF Directorate for Engineering (ENG) grants or as supplements to ongoing NSF ENG-funded projects and (2) RET Sites, which are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct research participation projects for a number of K-12 teachers and/or community college faculty. Approximately $3 million was expected to be available annually for awards when this solicitation was released in 2007, with sites limited to $500,000 total for a duration of up to three years and supplements limited to $10,000 per teacher for a duration of one year. Five site awards per year are anticipated. Proposals are due Nov. 17, 2008.
