Our 160-plus year stable isotope record from a central Pacific atoll is the longest continuous record of ENSO, and suggests that modern-day ENSO variability dominated by interannual variability is a 20th century phenomenon. In contrast, the colder 19th century was dominated by decadal ENSO variability - see Urban et al. (2000).
