Woodhouse and Overpeck (1998) coined the term “megadrought” for droughts that exceeded one or two decades in length. They describe two such megadroughts that hit much of North America in the 13th and 16th centuries. If such droughts were to occur again, the impacts on society would be unprecedented. Could the West currently be in the fourth year of a megadrought?
