The record of past climate and vegetation change is perhaps best articulated in eastern North America - see Overpeck et al. (2003), Jackson et al. (2000), and Jackson and Overpeck (2000). The use of dissimilarity coefficients as articulated in Overpeck et al. (1985) is now widely used in paleoceanography, as well as in paleoecology and paleoclimatology.
