General Paleoenvironmental Science

Overview

The laboratory is also interested in efforts to synthesize data and information across major paleoenvironmental areas and to work toward more effective uses of paleoenvironmental “perspectives” by a broad range of people. We have a weekly paleo discussion and an annual seminar to help keep ourselves cognizant of recent developments in the discipline. In a nutshell, a paleoperspective is essential for:

• understanding the full range of environmental variability
• identifying possible surprises in climate system behavior
• understanding how climate variability is affected by large changes in forcing
• evaluating the ability of models to simulate realistic change
• detecting anthropogenic environmental changes

Please note that our focus is on all aspects of the climate system: the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere.
