Instructional
Guide for Dynamic Maps (versión
en español)
The
purpose of the dynamic maps is to provide users the ability to navigate
to any location of the world and view areas susceptible to sea level
rise solely based on elevation and adjacency to the sea.
When a dynamic map is initially started:
•
the Toolbar (1) is on the left side
•
the Overview Map (2) is in the upper left
corner of the Map
Display Area (3)
• the Layer List (4) is on the right side

(1) Toolbar The
toolbar has twelve tools that allow a user to navigate the map in the map
display area and save
map images.
• Toggle between Legend and Layer List: The first
(i.e., top) tool switches back and forth between a legend with symbology
and a layer list with visibility options
•
Toggle Overview Map: The second tool adds or removes the overview
map from the upper left corner of the map display area
•
Zoom In: The third tool zooms in to the area of the map
display area around which a user clicks or drags a box
•
Zoom Out: The fourth tool zooms out from the area of the map
display area around which a user clicks or drags a box
•
Zoom to Full Extent: The fifth tool zooms to the full extent
of the current map
•
Back to Last Extent: The sixth tool zooms to the previous
extent of the map display area
•
Pan: The seventh tool pans the map
display area in the direction that a user drags the mouse pointer
•
Pan to North/South/East/West: The eighth through eleventh
tools pan the
map display area in the selected
direction
•
Save Map Image: The twelfth tool brings up text below the
map display area that prompts a user
to save the current view in the map
display area as
a JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG8, PNG24, or TIF image
Clicking once on a tool makes it active. When active, Zoom In, Zoom
Out,
and Pan, which require additional user input (see above tool descriptions),
have their toolbar icon highlighted with a red box
in addition to
their name being listed
in
the
lower
left
hand
corner of the browser window. All other tools automatically perform their function
when
activated.
(2) Overview Map The overview map always displays the
full
extent of the map. A red
line
delineates the current extent of the map
display area. The overview map is added or removed from the upper left
corner of the map display area with the Toggle
Overview Map tool.
(3) Map Display Area After the initial
start of a dynamic map, the map
display area shows the redrawn map in response to use of tools from the toolbar or
changes in the layer
list as directed
by a user. A north arrow and scalebar are located at the bottom of the
map display area.
(4) Layer List The layer list contains
the different layers available for viewing in the map
display area. Checking the box to the left of a layer makes it visible,
whereas unchecking a layer will make it invisible. After making changes
in the layer list, a user must click the 'Refresh Map' button at the
bottom
of the list in order for changes to be reflected on the map. Navigating
to an area of interest before adding additional layers to those initially
present will increase the speed at which the map is redrawn.
