ABSTRACT

Climate has been traditionally assumed to be both stable and predictable, except when disrupted by unusual conditions. But relict sand dunes, tree rings, and other records of past climates show evidence of megadroughts and other climate surprises over the past 2,000 years. Such events are likely to recur without warning, so society must prepare to adapt.
