The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is an organization committed to ensuring the retention and graduation of minority graduate students in mathematics, engineering, and science.

The Sloan Foundation and the University of Arizona's Department of Geosciences offers this scholarship to incoming MS and PhD students of African-American, Hispanic, or Native-American heritage (U.S. citizens or permanent residents only). All minority applicants to the MS and PhD programs in Geosciences are considered for the Sloan Scholarship.

Research Allowance

Sloan Scholars may receive up to $30,000 during their graduate program. Funds may be used to cover the costs of tuition, registration fees, stipends, books, summer support, travel to/from professional meetings, field expenses, or other approved purposes. Funds will be provided at the beginning of each semester in response to requests for support from a student and his/her advisor.

Sloan Scholars are guaranteed four consecutive years of support while in the PhD program and two consecutive years of support while in the MS program. When not supported by the Sloan Foundation during eligible years, support will be through a fellowship or through a teaching or research assistantship.

Faculty-Peer Mentoring

In addition to the regular faculty advisor, Sloan Scholars are assigned a faculty mentor (with a history of successfully advising and graduating minority students) and a peer mentor. For more information about the Sloan Scholars program, contact:
