700 Million Years Of Continental Margin Evolution
The
University of Arizona Geology Field School (GEOS
414) will run from May 19 to June 17, 2008. We will focus on
the stratigraphy, tectonics, petrology, geomorphology, and economic
geology of the Owens Valley region of California.
All qualified students from the University of Arizona, as well from
other universities, are welcome.
In practice, the course integrates many of the concepts learned in
the classroom into a unified approach to documenting and interpreting
geologic phenomena and history. In keeping with the strong tradition
of field geology at the University of Arizona, we strive to teach students
how to map and interpret geologic history in a variety of geologic
settings. In addition to basic methods of field geology, we continually
emphasize the regional tectonic context of our exercises. This regional
approach is facilitated by linking exercises in disparate types of
geology (sedimentary, structural, igneous, metamorphic, and Quaternary)
in one of the most spectacular geological regions on Earth. Special
emphasis is placed on the development of the Cordilleran miogeocline,
major Paleozoic and Mesozoic orogenic events, Cenozoic volcanism and
extension, and Quaternary glaciation.

We also develop the
historical aspects of the geology and tectonics, exposing the
students to the geology of the Precambrian through Quaternary.
