Professor Andy Cohen's Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project sponsored a four-day short course (Oct 7-10) in our Computational Geoscience Center. UA Geosciences' Computational Geoscience Center is a unique facility that brings together students, faculty and professionals in industry and government for training, teaching, and research using state-of-the-art platforms for computational methods applied to geodynamics, geophysics, and climate and ocean modeling.
Professor Susan Beck, postdoctoral researchers Rob Porritt and Colton Lynner and graduate student Daniel Portner are part of an international response to record aftershocks and study the M=7.8 megathrust Pedernales earthquake that occurred on April 16, 2016, off-shore Ecuador along the subduction zone plate boundary. Colton and Daniel recently returned from the first service run of the experiment. Service runs are used to collect the data that has been recording on flash cards and check to make sure everything is running properly.
GeoPathways recruits, mentors and provides paid internships for students who transfer to the UA Department of Geosciences from Arizona two-year colleges. Professor Karl Flessa is co-director of the program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation.
The inaugural offering of the four-day program “Leadership: Inventing the Future, A Breakthrough Leadership Program for the Mining Industry and Its Stakeholders,” will be February 7-10, 2017, in Tucson, Arizona, and will be led by executives of the Vanto Group.
