First workshop (10 points, in-class discussion,
D2L Workshop)

During the first workshop we will break into groups and discuss the meaning of the word "hypothesis." After this in-class discussion you will write down your own definition of the word. (so, bring paper and pencil) The definition must include the eight words below (try DiscoverySchool, Google or Wikipedia). Take your definition home with you to complete the workshop on D2L.

Don't list definitions of the eight words below. Instead, use these words correctly in a one-or-two sentence definition of the word "hypothesis."

After Class:
  1. using the definition (based on the 8 words) log onto D2L. The workshop consists of 10 multiple-choice questions about the 8 words.
  2. using your own materials begin the seed-germination experiment Saturday or Sunday at the latest See instructions (pdf) beginning on page 2, and see illustrations below.



Second workshop (10 points)

Submit your Hypothesis on D2L, based on page 5 of the instructions (pdf).
You must show your GTA your seedling experiments before they can award a grade for your hypothesis.



Materials: plastic bag, marker, paper towel, seeds, liquid
measurement ?



Select "nice" (uniform) seeds, water



Record: location, date, time, materials, measurements?



2 weeks later: results replicate 1



2 weeks later: results replicate 2



2 weeks later: results control





Third workshop (10 points, submit on D2L before the beginning of class)

Use page 6 of instructions (pdf).
Include
  1. Hypothesis (revised from workshop 2!) (2 pts)
  2. Prediction (revised from workshop 2!) (2 pts)
  3. Experiment (revised from workshop 2!) (2 pts)
  4. Results (include table and graph) (2 pts)
    • average growth for each bag
    • treatments vs. control
    • summarize
  5. Conclusions: Do the results support your hypothesis? What would you do differently if you did it over again? What would you test next? (2 pts)
