Mc PenicillinLivestock ranchers routinely give antibiotics to the animals they raise to make them grow faster and put on more weight. Unfortunately, this practice produces antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the livestock's tissues. The Euoropean Union has ordered it's member countries to end this practice by 2006. In June, 2003, the world's largest meat-supplier, McDonald's informed it's suppliers of chicken, pork, and beef that it would no longer purchase meat grown using antibiotics.
