  • ASSIGNED SEATING: Please send your requests for assigned seating after midnight next Monday, after online drop-add has closed.
  • EXTRA CREDIT: Please save your pictures until we call for them: About the time of the first exam.

  • 08/25/12
Please check our D2L homepage for GEOS170C, and click on "Assigned Seating." Except for those who requested seating changes before noon, today, the seating assignments are alphabetical by columns, from the upper left to the lower right.
The link for the seating chart is /AssignedSeatingFl12.pdf

    08/28/12
There have been many requests for seating changes, now that assigned seating has been posted. I'll make the requested changes this weekend. In the meantime, to get attendance credit, please sit in your currently assigned seat.

NOT turnitin. The schedule mistakenly identified where your seedling report should be deposited before next Friday. Deposit it in the D2L Dropbox.

    09/10/12
The GTAs JB & EH-P have started grading the seedling-report submissions. Unexpectedly, several students failed to submit their papers to the D2L Dropbox or submitted an unreadable file to the dropbox.
FIRST: email your GTA, they will assess a penalty depending on your situation. If appropriate, they will allow me to re-open the dropbox for you, for late submission. Make sure you know what you did wrong! Do this before 1:00pm Wed Sep 12.
SECOND: with their permission, I will reopen the dropbox for 2 days for your late submission.

    09/14/12
5:00pm Fri Sep 14, is the deadline for seedling report submission. Late submission policies were announced last Monday. Most students have now completed the process, those who have not, have until 5:00 Friday.

I'm pleased by the number of students doing the online practice exam. But, the D2L practice exam is lots better because it keeps changing the questions, so you get a much better preparation for the topics being covered (rather than memorizing just one question - answer). I scheduled the D2L practice exam for Friday, but due to the serious use of the online version, I've opened up the D2L version early.

    09/21/12
The D2L version of the practice exam for Exam One is open. There have already been 13 uses, so I'm sure it's working. You have unlimited attempts, but I can't help you if you cause it to freeze. Again, the D2L practice exam is the best way to study, because it asks questions about key concepts in different ways.
    Extra Credit Biology Pictures
From ½ to 5 "absences" (≈ 1 - 10 pts) may be excused depending to how "biological" vs "human-cultural" the photo is, and it's quality: In focus... In the D2L dropbox, you must claim copyright, and give me (Owen Davis) permission to display your image in GEOS170C. examples

    9/24/12
Debate Workshop (Wks3): This morning I found a mistake that was preventing the students who had participated in the debate from completing the workshop. I appologize for this mistake. Workshp 3 will be open until next Friday, October 5. The red circle RedCircle means you are approved.

    TWO practice exams
One practice exam is available online, but the questions do not change. It is useful because the colored number (9) on the quiz links to the reading or quiz lecture in which the concept is introduced, upon which the question is based. The D2L version of the practice exam for Exam One is open. There have already been 50 users, so I'm sure it's working. You have unlimited attempts, but I can't help you if you cause it to freeze. Again, the D2L practice exam is the best way to study, because it asks questions about key concepts in different ways.

    10/1/12
217 persons took the exam, last Friday. There was one perfect "100", and 14 persons scored 94% or better.
  • A   38
  • B   59
  • C   54
  • D   27
23 persons received no score, or did not take the exam. Please check your exam 1 grade on D2L. If you took the exam but received no score, you may have used a pen that Scantron could not grade.
Please contact me by email, putting "GEOS170c Exam 1" in the subject line, stating whether or not you took the exam, and include a copy of your academic schedule from your student link. You need to either fill out a new answer sheet in pencil, or you will need to retake the exam.

    EXAM TWO RESULTS
The exams for about 1/5 of the class were not scored correctly. Except for one person, the scantrons have not been marked darkly enough or the test form was not marked. Students whose exams weren't scored are being scheduled to help re-score the exams in the chronological order in which they contacted me. The grades won't be posted on D2L until this process is over, sometime next week.

    EXAM PROBLEMS ii
Another problem effected another 1/5 of the class members. Their scores were bad! The better they did, the worse their score!! With the help of our system consultant, the problem was traced to the way the data were translated from the Scantron to the grade sheet. I am starting over from scratch, but it will take a day or so. I apologize for this bizarre problem.

    11/12/12
    EXAM PROBLEMS iii
ALL of the exams have been rescored and checked and the results are much better an closer to the grades for the first exam. Many of the grades stayed the same, and about 1/3 of the grades, including those with scores less than 20% improved dramatically. A few grades ( about 20) dropped. It appears to be a computer program error.

    LAST ⅓ OF CLASS
Workshop 8 begins Friday. It is the last workshop of the semester. After then, Fridays will be used for lecture. The GTAs and I are grading the 2nd writing exercise. Traditionally, attendance lags after the second exam and grades drop, don't be a turkey!
