LIFE ON EARTH
Welcome to GEOS 170C1. There is no textbook for this class. All readings are online, as are the exams and workshops, on D2L. The class is nearly paperless. Attendance is required, and after the first week will be based on assigned seating.
Please send us a "biology picture" that you took, for this page!

FIRST LECTURE QUIZ
I've extended the time limit for finishing "Lecture Quiz 1-2, Introduction & Nature of Science", for all the students who are adding the class after classes start. You'll be able to take this quiz three times. The questions will change for each attempt, but they all cover the same material.
08/25/11

WEEK TWO
This morning I sent an email blast to everyone enrolled, reminding all to check the Assigned Seating Chart. Big pulse of drops & adds at the last minute, and requests for seating accommodations. We shouldn't have to make another general revision, this semester.
Friday, we'll discuss the 50-pt wright-up for the seedling experiment. REMEMBER you MUST show your experiment to your GTA (and they must record it) for you to have permission to submit your written report to TurnItIn.
08/30/11

ATTENDANCE
There were WAY too many absences, today! Attendance is based on whether or not you're sitting in your assigned seat. Jordon marked 14 persons sitting in seats that should not have been occupied. Those 14 students got no attendance credit for Wednesday. PLEASE find your assigned seat on the chart!

Workshop 2 & Workshop 3
Like Wksp 1, Workshop 2 is of 2 parts. There is a 5-point multiple-choice D2L exercise, plus a 5-point hand-in graded by your GTA. This is a genetic-engineering hand in (see schedule). The multiple-choice questions are taken from the Wks 2 instructions. You will use that same information in next Friday's debate. Next friday, come prepared with written "Pro" and "Con" statements and answer the questions on p. 2 of the Wks 3 instructions. Access to D2L Wks 3 is limited to students who participate in the debate. The multiple choice questions include questions about the debate, and questions about genetically modified food.

Plasmid grades have now been added to the multiple-choice questions for Wks 2. NOTE that prior to this addition, the scores on D2L were 2 times the multiple-choice score. If your score dropped, it is because your plasmid score was low.

Exam 2
The number of "As" for exam 2 is the highest it has been since the class was offered -- 36. The average was "C" due to a large number of low scores. I noticed that the GTAs caught a large number of mis-marked sheets, so if your score is very low, please come and help me check your scantron for errors!

Most students have the opportunity to raise their semester grade by scoring one or two grades above their current semester grade, on the third exam.
You need to repeat D2L practice exam 3 until you score above the grade you want, three times in a row.
NOTE the exam is 10:30 THIS ROOM (ML 350), m Dec 12.

>Wk8 & Extra Credit
Strangely, only 70% of the class did workshop 8 and only 102 students did the extra credit as of 3:00. However, that boosted the numbers of As and Bs, slightly. I have reset 10 student's D2L practice exams, so I suspect more As.
NOTE the exam is 10:30THIS ROOM (ML 350), m Dec 12.
Extra Credit
Open the D2L workshop to check whether your comments have been given credit. (extra credit is not in "grades")

Workshop 8
The Class Syllabus only lists 7 workshops. I forgot that when I added worskhop 8 to the schedule. To keep with the Syllabus, I have dropped everyone's lowest Workshop Grade.
