Seeds for Experiments:
Attention students who have picked up seeds from Prof. Davis for workshops: The two kinds of seeds are wheat (Triticum sativum) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor). He erroneously told some students the round red-and-white ones were "millet." For pictures of the seeds, see www.fao.org/docrep/ and
www.oznet.k-state.edu/path-ext/

Grades for Workshop 1, 2 & 3
The workshops are not automatically graded. The GTA's will grade them "by hand." They will begin when it is due. Students will be divided among the GTAs alphabetically. For example, Brenda Barker will grade materials for students whose last names begin with Aaa-Kah. (see "NATS 104 GTAs" above)

Email Subject Line
The University mail system and personal email programs all have spam checkers. Some messages from NATS104 students have already been found in the spam folders. You can prevent that by always putting "NATS104" in the subject line of your message.

FIRST POP QUIZ

The results of the first pop quiz are good and bad. 78 people were absent (bad) but the scores of those who were present were pretty good (fifteen 10/10 scores). You can pick it up from your GTA. If you lost points for miss-marking or sitting in the wrong seat, you cannot get points added to your grade.

09/20/07

FIRST 100 pt EXAM

The first 100-point exam will be on Friday. Wednesday will be an in-class review. There is an online practice exam, a D2L practice exam and two copies of old exams a b.
    REVISED!
The links were bad -- went to exam 2 and practice exam didn't work (didn't give the answers) We're sorry! Please try it again!

SECOND POP QUIZ

The results of the second pop quiz were better than the first. 66 (vs.78) students were absent, and there were 20 (vs.15) 10/10 scores. Fewer students lost points from mis-marking the seat numbers and score answers. The GTA's will have the graded quizzes.

The results of the First Exam are posted on D2L. They are the best I've seen for the first exam in NATA104. The highest grade was 100%, the lowest was 32%, the average was 74%. There were 54 "As," 71 "Bs," 53 "Cs," 33 "Ds" and 26 "Es."
The most missed question was, "The first photosynthetic organisms on Earth originated about __ billion years ago"

D2L Lecture Quizzes

The last two quizzes (and practice exam 1) showed only the CORRECT answers after completion. Starting with Lecture Quiz 11, it instead will show the WRONG answers after completion. It will not show BOTH because that discouraged students from looking up the wrong answers

WORKSHOP 6

At the beginning of today's lecture, Renata mentioned that lots of students were loosing points on the workshop 6 web site evaluation.
BAD SITES (lose points for using sites like these)
These are student papers! It would be like citing one of your NATS104 classmates! They are not researchers. They are not experts.
This is a charity! They are trying to get you to give them money! They are not researchers. They are not experts.
"Visit myLungHealth.com. Learn more about Asthma."
This is like a supermarket tabloid! It's pop-science.
GOOD SITES (gain points for using sites like these)
The original source for major medical studies. In comparison, the bad sites above have information copied from the people who got their information from this site.
Original reports by experts in the field. Go here to get the information that the bad sites are getting third-hand.

WORKSHOP 5, "Debate" grades

Grades will be posted as soon as participation (moderator's lists) are compiled

WORKSHOP 7, "Tools question"

The tools question was missing from the workshop, and there is no way to open the quiz for you to complete the question, without loosing the work you have already done. Therefore we have added a "tools question" workshop, available for one week. Your Workshop 7 grades will include that score, once it is graded by your GTA

10/20/07

WORKSHOP 9 Fri. Oct. 26

TERM PAPER ROUGH DRAFT DUE
Bring a full copy on paper to class!
Be Sure your GTA records your peer-review pair!
  • In class fill-out p. 7
  • After class, type p.7 to a file
    1. send the file to the author
    2. cut-&-paste peer review into D2L
POP QUIZ 4

There were 15 "10s" and 165 students were present for the quiz. Several quizzes could not be graded due to failure to fill out the quiz form correctly. If you turned in a quiz but do not have a score on D2L, please make an appointment to meet with with Prof. Davis, to fill-out the quiz correctly.

SURVEY 1

On D2L, those who completed the survey have a "10" next to their name. If there were problems with the submission - for example using numbers more than once in the rankings - a "1" is recorded. Email Prof. Davis, if you have a "1" or if you have questions.

(next week Exam 2 [Nov.5])
