Hawaiian Historical Biogeography Example

based on simple progression

Hibiscadelphus (plant) area cladogram

Predicted area cladogram

Drepanidinae (honeycreeper) area cladogram
Although Drosophila and Hibiscadelphus follow a modified progression rule but many of the intermediate islands (Oahu, Molokai, Maui) are skipped - clearly not sequential island hopping. The honeycreepers have repeatedly colonized different islands and speciated. Other groups (not shown) likewise do not show progression. The plant Tetramolopium colonized from the west onto Hawaii or Maui, and then spread to the older islands.
