Area Cladogram Example

The area cladogram uses phylogenetic relationships to trace geographical changes - either dispersal events or barriers to dispersal. The vicariance hypothesis is that the first barrier resulted in the trait that differentiated B & C from A, and the second barrier resulted in the trait that differentiated B from C. The dispersal hypothesis is that traits arose after each dispersal. However, the sequence of dispersals is not shown by the cladogram.
